Born from the Soil

The idea that all things originate from the soil has existed in myths and religions throughout the world since ancient times, and a hint of that sentiment can be felt to this day, however faintly.

In nature, soil has connotations of both death and rebirth, and can perhaps be thought of as the mother of circulation itself. The act of dyeing materials using life born from the soil creates new pathways while incorporating the elements of earth, fire, water, and wood. The message hidden in the soil is sublimated as color, awaking sensibilities that we need today.

The soil teaches us countless things. The “Born from the Soil” exhibition was created from the vortex of eatrip soil. New phenomena emerge through encounters that rely on soil for their existence, emitting a spirit that seems to thrust out of the ground toward to the sky thanks to the resonance of three elements in the soil—food, plants, and mud.

eatrip soilWhat do we really want and need? This grocery & souvenir shop brings together ingredients and objects for the kitchen and table from around the country, selected through a process that involves thinking about that key question. What we choose and what we buy is reflected in the life that we are living today, connecting us to the near future, and to the distant future as well. The shop is based on the "think buy" concept, in which people learn about the background behind the things they buy and remember the faces of those who made the products. In so doing, we treat time, which is invisible, as something important. We also hold everyday Seed Club events based on a conviction that touching on interests that emerge from life can resolve minor issues and can lead to the emergence and growth of new shoots.

KITTANAIAmami and Okinawa are islands located in the Ryukyu arc, which extends south from the main islands of Japan. Natural dyeing techniques are still used on these two islands, places that pulsate with ancient nature and culture. In 2021, Yukihito Kanai and kitta formed KITTANAI in an attempt to interact through color, expressing the beauty that dwells in nature through means that go beyond words.

kittaKitta views the process from the birth of an object to its return to the soil as a single, uninterrupted flow, from cultivating and collecting plant dyes in northern Okinawa, producing the dyes using wood fires and fermentation processes, then dyeing fabrics, to designing and sewing the final textile products. She creates clothing and art installations that revolve around the concept of mediating the space between nature and human beings.
