The selection of exhibits for this exhibition was made directly by David Lynch and exhibition curator Takayo Iida through a great deal of discussion spread over several sessions. The criteria for selection included the stipulation that each exhibit must be appropriate for the “From the Fringes of the Mind” concept in the exhibition title. Consequently, it presents works that explore the origins of Lynch’s creative output. In particular, it is devoted to the inspiration received from the industrial landscape of Philadelphia that informed Eraserhead, one of his early experimental films. The debate on which works to include eventually settled on 7 paintings, 3 drawings, 22 industrial zone photographs, 12 watercolors, and a previously unreleased short film “FIRE.”
